What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial release is a holistic, hands on approach using light to moderate touch. Over time the connective tissue of the body becomes tight and constricted due to trauma, stress, injury, surgery, inflammation and poor posture, all of which can lead to pain.
Every cell, bone, muscle and organ is covered in fascia, if the fascia is restricted in the body there will be tightness.
Myofascial release treats restrictions throughout the whole body and brings about permanent changes in the tissues by gently stretching the fascia to release the restriction. The philosophy is to look at the entire being, not to just focus on where the symptoms are. This way the therapist can focus on finding the root of the problem and facilitate true healing in their patient.
What can it help?
Acute and chronic back and neck pain
Tmj and jaw pain
Repetitive strain injury
Whiplash and other trauma
Relief from scar tissue
Mysterious pain and tightness which feels like a straight jacket or which seems to ‘pull’ through the body.
What to happens during a treatment?
Every treatment is different and no oil is used, just gentle pressure causing a stretch in the fascia and then just waiting for the tissues to let go and release by itself, this can take more than 5 mins in each area. This is a relaxing treatment, sometimes with sensations such as tingling, tightness, heat, cold and some can feel emotional as your body releases long held holding patterns.
Treatments can be 60 mins, 90 mins or 120 mins depending on your needs. We are all unique in our healing process so what works for one person may be different to the next. Some clients have found that longer treatments or treatments closer together have resulted in the desired outcomes faster, but the choice is yours.
Everybody responds differently to myofascial release. Some experience immediate, ongoing relief from symptoms after a treatment, while others it can take a couple of days before they feel the results. For a few individuals, the symptoms sometimes get worse before they get better (we call this a healing crisis)
This occurs as you begin to release’into the deeper layers of restrictions. Not only can the symptoms intensify, but also other sensations or emotions may come to the surface. Usually this process lasts around 48 hours, but can go on longer. This is your body’s way of bringing your awareness into what you are actually dealing with, everyday but you ”tune out” and don’t feel, but ultimately the outcome will be positive.
